Samuel Waldron papers, 1818-1839.

Business papers of Samuel Waldron, including incoming and drafts of outgoing letters, relate to his work in a variety of positions, including as agent for the Rhode Island Coal Company in Portsmouth, R.I. (1818-20); with his brother-in-law John Rynex of the Boston merchant firm of S. and J. Rynex and (after Rynex's bankruptcy and subsequent flight from Boston to Rhode Island in 1822) with (Thomas) Arnold and (Samuel) Rynex and other Boston firms; as a housewright in Boston and Nantucket; and as a founder and agent of the Ellsworth Land and Lumber Co. of Ellsworth, Me. (1836-38). Letters (1820-23) while Waldron was with Boston merchant firms relate to the prospects for sales of shoes and other items in Baltimore, Wheeling, W.V., Louisville, and Cincinnati and include a few letters from Waldron to his wife while on a scouting trip to those locations in 1820. Papers after 1823 pertain to the collection and settlement of Thomas Arnold's accounts. Correspondence with Waldron as a builder discusses plans for building a wharf, a bank, and a new Congregational church on Nantucket (1830-36). Much of the correspondence is with John Rynex regarding both their individual business prospects and joint ventures, including failures such as Ellsworth Land and Lumber. Throughout the papers are discussions of both men's financial difficulties and requests to Waldron for payment of long overdue bills.
